School District No. 1
recognizes the need for education to help families manage
their concerns with this flu season. The need for everyone to
maintain cleanliness is obvious but our goal is that all of us
understand the differences between colds, regular flu and the H1N1
flu. As a result we are providing three links for student and
parent use. The first is a prevention related description of "Action
Steps for Parents" that can help protect your
family from the flue this year. The second is a flyer explaining the differences between
cold and flu symptoms called "Cold
vs Flu" and the last is the CDC's brochure "Seasonal
and Novel H1N1 Flu: A Guide for Parents."
Copies of all three are available at the FHS office.
Additionally, the school is
working with the Fergus County Nurses office who has made
arrangements to be providing shots at the school on Monday, January
11, 2010. Notes asking for parental
permission were sent home before Christmas but can be obtained here
as well by using this link.

Freshmen Academy

This year's new welcome
poster for FHS freshmen!
The FHS staff welcomed 104 new
freshmen students to Fergus High on August 25th for a special orientation at 8:00 a.m.
Additional goals for the orientation were to educate freshmen in the
traditions and expectations of Fergus High, as well as bring them
together to improve their transition to high school life.
Staff emphasized the experiences and opportunities that can be found
here and how the keys to success. Additionally, a freshmen parent's orientation was held before school on Thursday, August 20th at 7:00
p.m.
All FHS freshmen core classes
and their students are part of what we call our Freshmen Academy.
The goals of the academy are
to make the transition to high school less difficult for incoming
freshmen, to create a consistency with our rules and expectations,
to promote cross-curricular education by working with one another
and to ensure that each and every freshman is successful in the
first year of high school. The academy will consist of all incoming
freshmen and their instructors. The academy teachers are Luke
Brandon, Richard Brosseau, Denise Nelson, Steve Olson, Cindy
Rutherford, Robert Rutledge (counselor), Gloria Wahl (academic
tutor) and our administrators, Principal Scott Dubbs and Asst.
Principal Tim Majerus.
Our Freshman Academy had
their first day long cross curricular field trip on Wednesday,
September 23rd at the Big Spring Creek FWP Hatchery. The
Hatchery Exploratory topics included local geology, stream dynamics
and entomology, a physical activity, geocaching and GPS use and a
project using creative art and writing. All topics relate back
to topics our freshmen curriculum follows.
